Clutter at home is a problem many face. And it's always a challenge. But when approached systematically, clutter can truly be within your control. Here's what you need to do first. There are three steps to control the menace a) Organise b) Stop buying c) Give away. Once you set these three actions into motion, your home should start looking like you've always wished it would. Do this diligently for a while and you will see change. While you are on that path, here are a few more pointers to get your home looking good. In the living room, unwanted mail forms a large part of junk. Ensure that you open mail as soon as it comes in. This only takes a minute and can ensure that you don't have a pile later. When you open mail, throw away unwanted mail immediately. Dispose off other mail weekly. It also helps to have files/brown paper covers to store ones you want to. Make specific places for specific things even if it's as simple as remote controls to be placed on the TV. This helps avoid piling of items. It also makes finding them easier. Everyday, make it a point to put away at least ten things that are in the wrong place. On weekends, and when you need to clear clutter, organise four boxes and mark them 'Keep', 'Give/Sell', 'Throw' and 'Later'. Segregate and be harsh (sometimes it's the only way to come clean). Once you've filled the boxes, concentrate your energy on disposing off the 'Throw' and 'Give/Sell' boxes first. Seal the 'Later' box and put it away for six months. If you don't go back to it, throw it away without even looking inside. Dispose off stuff ruthlessly if you haven't used it in two years Give away curios and other bric-a-brac that serve a decora tive purpose only. Functionali ty is what you need to look for when you purchase stuff for the house. This will not only make dusting easier, but your home will have a new, clean look as well. Hide that credit card until you have sorted out your existing stuff. Tell yourself that you won't ever have a clear house if you add to junk. Cleaning should be as regular as sleeping. You need to and it's good for you. Another golden rule, 'if you can't fix it, try to get it fixed'. And if that doesn't work, throw it out fast. After all, what do you plan to do with piles of broken curios and utensils you can never use again? Keep a shoe rack at a convenient place in the house that even small children can reach and make sure everyone keeps their footwear on the rack. This makes the house half as sandy. Pull out clothes from all shelves (one room at a time) once every six months. Donate those that don't fit and only put back ones you use. A laundry basket outside the bathroom or wherever there's usually a clothes pile, is invaluable to prevent clothes from being strewn all over.
