W.E.B. DuBois – the Pan-Africanist Leader

W.E.B. DuBois devoted all his life and career to solving the problems of racism, separatism, international communism and expatriation. David Lewis, the biographer, described life of this Pan-Africanist leader. DuBois was a scientist and had good education. People know him as an activist who devoted all his attention to the problem of American civil rights. Most of his works (The Philadelphia Negro, John Brown etc.) are dedicated to the African American cultures, to the rights’ violation. His book “Black Reconstruction” published in 1935 describes the life of African Americans. It became one of the most famous books in the world devoted to this issue.

We should tell about the main idea of this book and give a description of time described in it, before concentrating on thesis statement of the work. It should be mentioned that W.E.B. DuBois was a follower of the Marxism theory, so some of his conclusions were made basing on this theory, which was popular at that times. After the defeat of the south in the Civil War followed its reconstruction and the book describes these events under the impact of Marxism.

In this book the author is sharing his point of view with the readers. He writes that the effect of the reconstruction of the south was negative and caused the appearance of the Jim Crow laws, it brought out the violation of rights and freedoms of proletariats. So the thesis statement of DuBois’s book can be as follows: despite the traditions of democracy in the United States of America, which were positive, they didn’t prevented the division of the American population into two classes, and namely- proletariat, which included the Black and White laborers, and bourgeoisie, which consisted of White citizens, rather affluent and prosperous.
