Infection may affect during pregnancy the urinary system: the bladder, urethra are the most affected but, also the ureter and the kidneys. Urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria, that are present all the time on the skin, mucous. If they enter the urinary tract they multiply and cause pain and irritation. The bacteria may enter the urinary tract when the urine is blocked by the pressure of the uterus during pregnancy, after sexual intercourse, when catheters are placed in the bladder. Urinary infections are more frequent in women, because during the sexual intercourse the bacteria is pushed in the vagina, but anyone can develop an urinary infection. If treated properly urinary infections do not cause severe health problems, but they may affect the kidney if the treatment is not respected entirely. In pregnant women it is important to prevent the complications and to treat as quickly as possible urinary infections, because the changes in pregnancy hormones increase the chances to develop urinary infections that may ascend to the kidney. Pay attention to the following signs that indicate a possible urinary infection: frequent urination, difficulty when urinating, burning sensations and cramps, in the lower back and abdomen, cloudy urine. If you suspect an urinary infection you should consult your health provider, after having tested your urine of your red blood cells and white blood cells and for bacteria(urine culture). If your urinary infection is causing discomfort you may begin your treatment before the results of urine come back. It is recommended to take antibiotics for 7 days, and symptoms may disappear in 4 days, but you must not stop the treatment earlier otherwise the infection may come back. Doctors suggest some measures to prevent urinary infections which are to be applied to pregnant and also to unpregnant women: drink at least 10 glass of water daily, empty your bladder after and before sex, don’t use hygiene feminine products that may cause irritation, change feminine pads often, wash your genital area, showers are recommended instead of baths, wear cotton underwear and avoid tight fitting clothing. Infections affect us day by day, but during pregnancy women are affected more often by infections and certain types of infections are dangerous for the mother and baby. Pregnancy may cause vaginal infection for example candida. This yeast caused by Candida albicans is commonly find in women’s vagina, but during pregnancy its percentage is increasing. It is recommended the treatment with Clotrimazole(vaginal suppositories), during pregnancy tablets of Fluconazole are not prescribed supposing they affect the baby. It is more commonly during summer, in diabetic women, after having taken long time antibiotics and requires treatment only if producing soreness, itching and a typical white discharge.
