The common heart attack ( or myocardial infarction in medical terms) happens when one or more parts of the heart are deprived of the much needed, oxygen fool blood, that occurs because of a blockage. The building up of plaque (atherosclerosis ) is the number one factor that causes this blockages. The plaque is actually cholesterol, other fatty substances, and a blood clot. This building up reduces the flow of blood to the heart and also from the heart to the other organs in the body. The prolonged ‘starvation’ of the heart of the much needed oxygenated flow of blood causes muscle cells of the heart to suffer severe and devastating damage and die. This results in the death of an area of muscle in the heart. Inherited and acquired risk factors are the major two risk factors. Inherited or genetic risk factors are risk factors you are born with that cannot be changed, but with appropriate medical directions and way of life they can be seriously improved. On the other hand acquired risks are the one risks that we our selves take upon us by choosing an unhealthy way of life; this in particular can be improved with simple diet changes and daily exercises and different activities. Inherited factors would be: people with high blood pressure, people with high-density lipoproteins or high levels of low-density lipoprotein, persons that have a family history of heart diseases, diabetic people, aging persons, women, after the onset of menopause (generally, men are at risk at an earlier age than women, but after the onset of menopause, women are equally at risk). Acquired risks are : a sedentary way of life, drinking to much alcohol, a very stressed way of life, persons overweight by 30 percent or more, people who especially eat lots of fatty foods, people with type 2 diabetes, people that have high blood pressure. By knowing all the risk factors you are possible to face and by taking action to eliminate or reduce them, a person can greatly reduce the risk of having a heart attack. This way a some short but very effective steps can be taken: -first one needs to understand and know all the risk factors that he can apply to him, and this way try to reduce or eliminate them. -knowing if you have high cholesterol levels or if you are hypertensive. -changing your life style in such a way that you are no longer at risk of acquiring new problems related to the heart attack. -always consult a doctor regarding the threats of heart attack and do regular medical check ups. Many symptoms may actually tell you ahead of time you might be predisposed to have a heart attack; chest pains, indigestion or pain in the abdomen, discomfort that spreads to the shoulders, neck, arms, or jaw, severe pressure or fullness in the center of the chest etc. You should always pay attention to them and act accordinglys
