Prayer Service in Islam: Rules and Requirements

For every person a prayer is a chance of communication with God. People can tell him about his o her problems, worries and concerns, ask him for help. Prayer services are conducted in special places, during the prayer a person has to be pure both spiritually and emotionally so as to be closer to God. The religious services in Islam are no exceptions.

Muslims are to pray five times during a day and they do it at the specific times. Christians had to perform several prayers a day, but it was in the past. They did it before or after the errands or business. Nowadays people usually pray in the evening or before meals. There are towers on many Mosques, they are called Minarets. There is a special person who gets on the top of a Minaret and calls all the Muslims to the prayer service. This person is called muezzin. At present not every Mosque has a Minaret; mostly traditional Mosques in Muslim countries have them.

If a person that is non-Muslim wants to be present at the prayer service, he will be allowed to attend the service. Muslims has always peacefully co-existed with non-Islamic people. There are special rules concerning the clothes at the prayer service. Such requirements exist in any religion. The rules are as follows: clean and modest clothes, long skirts and long-sleeved shirts (for women), covered head and hair. Covered hair is the most important requirement because the uncovered hair can distract somebody’s attention during the prayer. Before a prayer service people take off their shoes and leave them outside the Mosque. They do so because in Arab nations the sole of the foot or the shoe is believed to be the dirtiest part of the body.
