Performing Arts and Cross-age Tutoring in Special Schools

Fox Hollies Special School is for children who have learning difficulties which are considered to be severe. This school is well-known in the country for performing arts (drama, dances). The pupils of this school take part in the MENCAP Transactive Project assisted by peers. They are involved in such projects as Birmingham Royal Ballet and Cafe Atlantique projects. These programs are connected with arts and work experience. Pupils from this school having severe learning difficulties work with learners from mainstream schools and children with problems similar to theirs. With the help of Valued Youth scheme pupils of the Fox Hollies Special School received help from peers. The project of this school is being very carefully evaluated.

Birmingham has received distinguished results in using students of high school who have serious behavioral and emotional difficulties as tutors for pupils of primary and special schools. In such conditions these students usually demonstrate a very positive part of their personality. The Broadway Project wants to extend this by implying in reading the cross-age tutoring for children who have behavioral problems and attend Lower school of a high school. Later they want pupils of Upper School to be the tutors of Lower School pupils. This high school (Broadway) consists of two campuses.

As in England no changes can be made if they are not provided by the national curriculum, many innovations concerning education happen in Celtic fringes. However, in the first two years this high school hasn’t shown any achievement growth and this situation worries the whole country. In this school second year readers with middle abilities act as tutors to first year readers with low abilities. Among these first year pupils there are many children with special needs. They read high motivation books which are used to improve the reading skills and self-esteem of both tutor and tutee.
