Motocross VS SuperCross

Roots of dirt track racing began with motocross. Motocross races are conducted on closed dirt courses that must be a minimum of a half-mile long and a maximum of 2 miles. Tracks should never be narrower than 16 feet and ideally maintain a 40 foot width. The course should be irregular so that both right and left hand turns have to be negotiated. It is desirable to include hills, jumps and other terrain that would require gear changing. Wherever possible, natural terrain should be used. Due to noise ordinances and space requirements needed, not only for the track but also for the seating, concessions stand, and parking, motocross tracks are mostly built in rural areas of the country.

Supercross is conducted on a specially-constructed dirt race track within a stadium style facility. Except where narrower sections are placed to benefit traffic flow, such as dual line turns, the supercross race track should be approximately 20 feet in width at its narrowest point. The length of the course is dependant upon the track size and design of the area or facility used.

Two classes, Two Champions
Competitions within the AMA Motocross and Supercross Championships include two classes based on engine type and size: AMA Supercross first class is for 250cc two-stroke and the second class is for 450cc four-stroke machinery. AMA Supercross first class is for 125cc two-stroke and 250cc four-stroke machines. This same structure applies to the AMA Motocross and AMA
Motocross Lites classes.
Championship titles are presented in the AMA National, AMA Supercross, AMA Motocross and AMA Motocross Lites classes. The Supercross Lites class is split into eastern and western divisions.

Motocross and supercross racing rules
At motocrosses, lottery, point standings and being a champion all weigh in when determining starting positions. Within the top ten riders, their starting position will be determined by current point standings in that class. In addition, all former National Champions who wish to compete will be exempted from meeting qualifying requirements and will be seeded by lottery. Remaining starting positions are to be decided by the lottery as well. In all cases where qualifying motos are needed to determine an acceptable starting field, the following procedure will be used:

Starting positions for main motos are determined by the finish order of riders in qualifying motos. That order is as follows: the winner of each qualifier will get the opportunity to his or her choice of position (after seeded riders), next are 2nd place finishers, then 3rd place finishers, and so on.

In all subsequent motos, the riders will choose positions according to finish position from previous motos. The starting position will be allocated by the Race Manager in the event results from the previous moto are not available.
Riders will be called from the starting area to line up on the starting gate. Exchanging gate positions with other riders is not allowed, riders must take their assigned position on the gate.

Ready, set, race! When the last rider is in the gate and the track is cleared to begin, the Race Manager will direct the Starter to hold up a 30-second sign. The 30-second sign will be held upright for 30 seconds, then turned sideways for at least five seconds, but not more than ten seconds. During the five to ten second interval, the gate will fall and the race begins!
