Mannerism as a Result of the Renaissance Evolution

A work of Giovanni-Battista-Franco which he painted in the 16th century may serve as a great example of the mannerism. Most people who have seen this painting at least once find it quite strange. In spite of the fact that this picture is visually stirring, it remains a masterpiece of the Mannerist of the 16th century.

The basis of this work, including its composition and a lot of details were taken from Michelangelo’s study. It should be mentioned that he was a real Renaissance master. But in the picture of Giovanni-Battista-Franco the style of Michelangelo was very complicated. The figures are very high, clumsy and disproportionate. The painting has no distinctive colors of Renaissance and namely yellow, red and blue, although these three colors are characteristic of the Renaissance. In this work of late Renaissance we can find orange, pink and green colors instead of colors peculiar to Renaissance. Some parts of the picture can be seen rather distinctly while others are somewhere in the background. There is no harmony and balance in the painting. The people pictured in the painting seem to may fall at any moment. People tired of the harmony and balance of the late Renaissance want to see something different, something strange and awkward. The classical Renaissance has evolved in something different and this picture is a good example if such changes. The artist wanted to reveal true feelings and moods of the figures using not their faces, but bodies. This work is a great example of how a real object, a painting may comprise such emotions and energy.
