Join the World of Roller Skating!

Most of us know roller skating as an exciting hobby of moving on smooth surfaces with roller skates that nowadays is becoming more and more popular with generations of any age- you will quite possibly see a child skating together with his granny.

Roller skating is widely appreciated as a wonderful way of combining recreational hobby with a relaxing sports activity, and, in comparison to ice skating, it more often represents an original form of reaching one’s destination. There are two general types of skates - inline skates and traditional quad ones. However, some daring personalities experiment with a quintessence skate (with just one wheel) or other types of specially-designed roller skates.

Some Facts from the History

The first use of roller skates which marked the history as a recorded fact took place in a performance held in London in 1743. Unfortunately, nobody is aware of the skate-inventor’s name. Some time later, in 1760 there appeared the first known skate inventor - Jean-Joseph Merlin, who presented the world with his simple inline skate equipped with metal wheels. The first roller skate which received a patented design was invented by M. Petitbled, in France in 1819.

The initially-designed skates resembled the modern inline skates, but they had a significant disadvantage – the lack of maneuverability; the only thing you could do with them well was moving in a straight line and performing wide sweeping turns. During the 19th century, numerous inventors were involved into improving skate design. The first mass-produced roller skates had already appeared in America by the 1880s, the period characterized by the first of several booms for the sport.

Those inline skate models produced in the period of 1980-1990 available for general public featured a hard plastic boot comparable to ski boots. The year 1995 the market witnessed the invention of "soft boots." The majority of skates you will find in the present-day market are either quad or traditional inline design.

There are different ways one may go roller-skating. Someone feels excited to perform jumps while roller skating, even having roller-skates suitable just for Fitness skating, while the others use their Aggressive skates, designed to provide more control during tricks, for simple walks. If you are mastering Agressive style, it means you will be able to demonstrate nice acrobatic and really striking tricks, but be careful to avoid the risk of getting injuries.
