In the world there are about 1.5 billion believers of Islam and they are called “Muslims”. That’s why Islam is the second (after Christianity) largest religion in the modern world. Islam and its adherents were the issue of a lot of disputes. All the controversy is connected with the relation of Islam and Islamic people to the terrorist attacks in many countries. There are various opinions on this problem. Before doing any conclusions, an excursus into the history and traditions of Islam should be made so as to get to know all the traditions and customs of this religion and try to understand them.

Just like Christianity Islam is a monotheistic religion. It is based on the teaching of the God’s prophet who lived in the 7th century and was known as Muhammad. Sunnah is a religious book which is very important for Muslims. This book contains the description of the prophet’s life and his teachings. As a religious leader Muhammad began his career in Mecca, where he was preaching against polytheism religions. Later the prophet Muhammad and his followers moved to Medina. Soon he became a famous religious and political leader. At the end of his days, Muhammad was the governor of the Arabian Peninsula.

“Submission” and “acceptance” are the translations of the word “Islam” into English. Muslims have a sacred book which is called Qur’an. The word “Qur’an” is translated into English as “recitation”. The God sent this book to Muhammad through the angel named Gabriel. The Muslims also believe that all the prophets of the God were the preachers of the principles of Islam, and it is depicted in the Qur’an. Speaking about Qur’an and referring to the recitation of it, Muslims usually use the sacred book written in Arabic language. Qur’an is the primary law for the Islamic people and it is the main source of guidance for them.
