Is Non-fiction the Reason of Low Reading Skills of Male Primary Pupils?

The University of Southampton has undertaken a survey dedicated to the problem why reading skills of boys are lower than the reading skills of girls. This study lasted two year. The scientists presupposed that this fact might be connected with their interest in non-fiction texts. They decided that their study could shed light on this issue.

The Fact and Fiction Research Project took seven to nine-year-old male pupils for their survey. They watched these boys reading in and out of school. They found out that non-fiction texts do not hinder the pupils in the improving reading skills. Absence of such texts in the reading curriculum doesn’t infringe upon pupils’ interests. The study showed that the inclination to visually based non-fiction is just a way to hide their bad reading skills.

The boys’ attention was attracted more by the visual texts than by the written ones. Some boys looked through a sticker album, counted its pages, compared the collections and picked up the best sticker. Boys do not want to read fiction, they are more interested in visually based non-fiction, because they are not very good at reading. Reading of fiction in class performs different hierarchy. The monitoring of pupil’s progress in reading was used to classify their competence as readers to define the texts pupils will have access to. Books pupils get to read make their relative standing public in the reading stakes. The study showed that boys and girls react in a different way upon the exposure.

Girls with low reading skills do not find it shameful to get judgements from teacher about their bad reading. Such girls accept help from better readers without great difficulties. As for the boys who are not very good at reading it is very hard for them to recognize in public their demerits.
