International Travel Health Insurance Should Not Be An Option

If you are thinking about traveling overseas, whether on business or for pleasure and for only a few days or many weeks, you should not travel before you have bought suitable international travel health insurance coverage.

Health care can be very costly abroad and in many countries you will discover that you will be unable to get medical treatment, even in an emergency, unless you are in a position to pay up front. If this seems strange then trust me it is a fact.

On a recent trip I accompanied a colleague to hospital in a popular Far Eastern holiday town following a luckily minor road traffic accident in which he suffered a nasty cut to his thigh requiring stitches and, in addition to the doctors and nurses in the emergency room, we also ran into one of the hospital cashiers who requested details of my friend's health insurance or a credit card/cash payment before any treatment could be started.

International travel health insurance is specifically designed to provide medical coverage for individuals traveling abroad and is a very flexible type of health insurance. It often allows for daily rates (rates which are based on the number of days for which you will be traveling) and can normally be bought without the need to answer health questions and regardless of your age. Cover is also normally available on a worldwide basis and can also be arranged to provide cover for travel to particular countries.

One particularly important thing to consider when arranging international travel health insurance however is just where in the world you intend traveling to and what sort of medical care will be available at your destination. Against this background, you should ensure that any policy covers you for every situation including things like hospitalization, ambulance fees (including the possible need for an air ambulance) and, most importantly, coverage for transportation back home if this proves necessary.

Do not forget also that, if you are traveling as a family, any plan should cover all members of the family and provide for such things as expenses should it be necessary for you to stay in the hospital with a sick child or to travel home with a child by air ambulance.

One of the very last things that we ever think about occurring when we travel abroad, particularly on vacation, is being involved in an accident or falling sick while we are away with anything more than a simple upset stomach. Nevertheless, accidents do happen daily and sudden and serious illness can and does strike without any warning. Indeed, the chances of such events are considerably increased when we are out of our usual environment, so why should we take the risk.

When it comes to arranging international travel health insurance the principles are exactly the same as those which apply to arranging any other form of insurance. Take your time and shop around examining plans from several different companies before making your choice. Stick with well know major insurers, which have an international reputation, and read through the small print of any contract document before signing on the dotted line.

Finally, bear in mind that sorting out medical problems when you are ill and hundreds or thousands of miles from home is something which needs to be quick and easy. So, do not be tempted to cut corners when arranging your plan! You might pay a bit more than you might perhaps wish to but, if you have to call on your policy, you will be very glad that you spent those few extra dollars.
