IP relay was created to be used by the deaf, hard of hearing, and speech disabled. Offering free telephone communcation via the internet, it initially revolutionized the way that the hearing disabled communicated. Then mistakes were made. The service was made free to public. No proof of disability required, all you need to do is log on to internet , no questions asked. Second, the service is protected under United States government law. It is illegal for Verizon (or any other company with relay services) to keep transcripts or documentation of calls received, and it's illegal for call information to be shared. Third, the system can only make calls within the United States of America. Only problem is that anyone around the world can make a free call to a US number. Essentially the United States is providing free telephone communication to Nigerian scammers. So in a roundabout way the government is making money off of the scam calls as well since the relay services get paid depending on call volume. Not only online scammers are abusing the system. Bored 14 year olds flood the system with inane and pointless prank phone calls. they upload it to youtube sometimes (online video sharing site ). Also, a problem that I've seen is lots and lots of people with no hearing impairment are using the service because it's basically a free phone service for them to abuse. All sorts of people abuse the service for this purpose, ranging from Hispanics to blacks to lower class white people. Every day I get calls where people ask, "Why don't you just call me on a regular phone?" The big problem with that is every day we get busy and get into a queue, so while some 14 year old kiddie who can afford a computer and the internet, but doesn't want to splurge on an actual human phone, is backing up the relay system so an actual deaf person has to wait in queue so Jose can chat it up with his relatives. Employees at relay talk about using the service to call their friends and family. Why? Last time I checked God gave me two ears that work perfectly fine, and I also have fingers that happen to know their way around a telephone, why the hell would I have to use a service intended for the deaf and hard of hearing? Every time I get one of those calls I just want to tell the person to get a job and buy a phone, they've been around for 131 years, they're nothing new. Is that how lazy we've become? That we've found it easier to make someone else speak for us? It reaffirms my faith in abortion, so now I whole heartedly agree with this woman. Oh yeah, and every once in a while a deaf person will actually make a call, and I cherish those. No matter how rude and unruly they will get (And they will, some of them are angry people) I still love those calls because they're the only ones who actually get to use relay. So if you have a friend or relative that talks about this cool new service that lets them make phone calls without actually having to do anything because picking up a phone and speaking is just too much to ask, punch them until their jaw breaks( i'm just kidding, dont do it ) and give them a legitimate reason to use the service. That's all I want you to do. This article was published using Article Submitter
