How to Teach Scripture Memorization

Is the person you're discipling having difficulty memorizing Scripture? If so, try the following:

1. Ask God to give her a driving desire to memorize His Word.

2. Do a Bible study together that stresses the benefits of knowing God's Word.

3. Help him decide what to memorize. You might want to begin with a plan such as the Topical Memory System (NavPress). You can also help him select key verses from Bible studies and quiet times.

4. Before he begins to memorize the verse, have him explain it in his own words. Make sure he understands its meaning.

5. Teach her to say the reference each time she repeats the verse, both at the beginning and the end. That way there will be one less person saying, "Somewhere in the Bible it says . . . "

6. Repetition is the most productive method for memorizing. Engage as many of the senses as you can. Have her read the verse out loud. Have her write it on an index card that she can carry with her. Sometimes it's helpful to write one phrase of the verse, or even one word, per card, like with flashcards. Once the person you're discipling has several verses under her belt, have her record them on a cassette tape that she can use for review. Which brings us to . . .

7. Review, review, review. Have him review a newly learned verse daily for six weeks. Then he can move the verse card into a weekly review box. After another six weeks, he can move that same verse card into a monthly review box. Set aside one month to review all the verses learned that year.
