Look around you on any summer day and you will see that more and more Americans are outside, enjoying great times out of doors. They may be big families, retired couples, recent immigrants, singles, young people and seniors - all of them have packed up their luggage, filled a cooler with food, and are on the road, traveling to their getaway destination outside. Would you like to be one of them? Well, this article will focus on some things you can do to be a successful camper this summer. What is your first priority? Well, believe it or not, it's having the right type of shelter. Once you have finally arrived at your destination, what will you stay in - where will you sleep? Two basic choices in outdoor lodging are the tent or the trailer. Many people choose to live and sleep in a tent, as this has a price advantage: a tent costs much less than a trailer. But what if the weather is bad? Then a tent may not seem like such a great idea. If you do want to use a tent , you will find many options: there are a multitude of tent designs and sizes to choose from, from a one or two man pup tent, all the way up to large family size camping tents. Perhaps you would rather go with a trailer instead of a tent? Well, you also have many choices: compact trailers, pop-ups, large RV's. It is perhaps best to choose a trailer if you will be camping during any time of the year when the weather might be bad. There's nothing worse (in my opinion) than being stuck in a tent for a week when it is raining every day (I have had this happen to me)! Many people are reluctant to purchase a trailer because of the greater cost, but it is possible to find good used camping trailers at a fraction of their original selling price. Once you have picked the form of shelter you prefer, your next priority is having a place to cook outdoors. Of course, if you have purchased a trailer with a kitchen, this issue has automatically been dealt with. But if you have purchased a tent instead, then you will also be wise to invest in a good outdoor camp stove. If you will need a camp stove, you can get a very simple unit - there are lightweight units designed for backpacking and mountaineering that only weigh a few ounces. Or you can get something more elaborate - some camping stoves even come equipped with ovens so that you can bake a meatloaf, casserole dish, or birthday cake outside! And don't forget to buy the necessary accessories, such as attachment griddles, replacement grills, lights for nighttime cooking, utensils and replacement parts for maintenance. What else might you find useful to take on your camping trip? Well, consider seating. What are you going to sit on? A broken-down tree log? The jagged top of a tree stump? The bare ground? You will soon find that those things don't make for a very comfortable sitting experience! Instead, why don't you look into purchasing one or more good-quality folding camping chairs. The newer models are very lightweight and yet sturdy. I have seen models advertised that can hold hundreds of pounds in weight - a great help for the overweight camper. You are out camping and get bitten by a snake. What do you do? Your kid slips on the wet grass and sprains their ankle, could you help them? And what if the nearest doctor or hospital is 50 miles away? All of this points up the necessity of having a good camping first aid kit. These are specially stocked with the supplies that you will need if you have a medical emergency in the outdoors. This is an essential item - a persons' life may be saved, or serious injury avoided, if you have a good first aid kit handy. So now you have selected the best type of outdoor shelter for you and your family. You have fitted out your outdoor kitchen and have arranged a couple of comfy outdoor camping chairs outside. You have your outdoor first aid kit handy if the need arises. Only one thing remains: get out there and enjoy the outdoors!
