Hitler about the Dual Alliance

Hitler says in his book Mein Kampf that after learning in history class at school about the events leading to the World War I, the biggest mistake the German Empire could have done was creating the Alliance with Austria in the year 1879, claiming that Austria would be the crash of Germany. Further he annotated dislike for the Hapsburg Empire, referring to it as feeble and disorganized and claimed to have foretold its demolish. Hitler in his book tries to make himself out as a predictor with knowledge verging to omniscience. Bismarck certainly didn’t want to form an alliance with Austria, but he did this for the sake of nationalism itself, pure German nationalism. This appears to be a direct opposition on the part of Bismarck as well as Hitler concerning their opinions on nationalism, specifically owing to Hitler accusing the Austrian Alliance and moreover Bismarck forming the Austrian Alliance.

During the writing of the book Hitler’s view certainly was that all Germans should be brought together under one Reich, and Bismarck the Alliance with Austria to be right in order to annex the former empire after its breakdown, but Hitler says that being a student in Austria he didn’t agree with this decision of Bismarck. Hitler explains his disagreement by stating his aversion and lack of faith in the Hapsburg Empire, and says that defense of Germany proper was much more significant than his modern view on nationalism itself. This is another one contradiction for Hitler had said in the very beginning of his book Mein Kampf that his view on nationalism and namely that all Germans should live in one Reich, should come at any price irrespective of its consequences. This contradiction can be partly explained with the fact that the annexation of Austria by Germany would have meant a multi-cultural society that was desired neither by Bismarck nor by Hitler.
