To make sure you're not only increasing in knowledge but also gaining wisdom, turn to the book of Proverbs. Through one or more of the following activities, a growing Christian can find a treasure "more precious than rubies" (Prov. 8:11). 1. Read one chapter of Proverbs a day. For example, on the fifth day of the month, read Proverbs 5. 2. Pray through the book of Proverbs. As you come to verses that relate to your life, stop and rephrase the verses into a prayer. For example, "Lord, help me to not be enticed by sinners. Keep me from walking in the way with them" (Prov. 1:10, Prov. 1:15). 3. Do topical studies in Proverbs. What does this book of wisdom have to say about anger, the tongue, marriage, child training, pride, etc.? 4. Highlight the word "wisdom" every time you see it. Jot down what each reference teaches about wisdom (e.g., how it's obtained, its benefits, etc.). 5. Start a wisdom notebook. Divide each page into two columns. As you read through Proverbs from day to day, record the wisdom of God in one column, and the contrasting wisdom of the world (such as opinions, popular culture, and intellectual reasoning) in the other column. This notebook is something that can be added to over the long term as you study other books of the Bible and glean additional insights into God's wisdom. © 2006 by Rebecca Livermore, a speaker and freelance writer from Denver, Colorado.
