PLACING tiny peaces of plastic –contact lenses on the eyes has become a popular method for correcting eye defects. But this choice, which does not change your looks, like glasses, is not without a certain level of risk.
Overuse is the most common cause of complication arising out of contracts. From blurry vision, pain and light sensitivity, over use is also known to cause corneal stress and fluctuating vision.

Follow instruction
Though there is no hard and fast rule as to the number of hours anyone can use a pair of contract lenses in a day, it is best to avoid using them for prolonged periods. Dr Santhan Gopal, an Eye Specialist explains why. “The cornea of the eye needs atmospheric oxygen for proper functioning. Contact lens reduces this supply by 50 per cent. Some people tend to sleep wearing them which further reduces the supply about 50 per cent.” But, wearing contacts does not in itself cause any harm to the eye. ”There are host of instruction given by the prescribing doctor and the manufactures which every user should follow” inform Dr Gopal. When contract lens users fail to follow these precautions, some complications are arise, he informs.

Infections
Some contact lens users also develop fungal, bacterial or amoebic infections. The most common reason for infection is unhygienic practices of lens users. “Some people have this distinguish and really dangerous habit of using saliva to wet contract before wearing them,” says Gopal. Washing hands before wearing lens, using proper lens fluid for cleaning and wetting the lens are a few of the precautions that every lens user should follow “When lens fluids are not replaced within the specified period of one month, infectious organism start growing on them, “Gopal cautions. Environment also plays an important role in people getting infected. Contact lens users working in dusty and dirty environment are most prone to eye infections.
Inflammation of the cornea caused by bacteria is the most common infection in contract lens users. “Keratitis, or inflammation is a serious complication which has source in bacteria,” says Dr A Punith Kumar, an eye specialist. “Streptococcal, Staphylococcal and Pseudomonas are the three common bacteria which cause Keratitis “. It is infection affecting mostly soft lens users who use it for an extended period. “Doctor these days recommended completely avoiding wearing contract lenses overnight. This applies even to those varieties that are meant for extended use,” he adds. Keratitis is an infection that can, in severe cases, cause blindness. A common germ found in tap water is also known to cause keratitis

Treatment
“Broad spectrums of antibiotics are available for infections. But it is necessary to go fro then under a specialist’s prescription.” If initial treatment does not give necessary results, the doctor may go for advanced treatment after a detailed check-up. “Hospitalization in extreme cases is not ruled out,” says Dr Kumar. It is estimated that five to ten per cent of all contact lens users are infected at some point of time.

Contact lenses offer the cosmetic benefit, but in exchange they demand a lot of attention. Treating your contact with care and taking necessary precautions is the only way to ensure that your eyes and vision remain healthy.
