Recommended Supplies and Cleaning Equipment: Beaded Drain Opener Liquid Drain Opener Face Mask/Goggles Rubber Gloves Recommended Method: 1. As in all cleaning procedures, the first step is to gather the recommended cleaning equipment together and bring to the area to be cleaned. 2. Routine Maintenance: place several ounces of liquid drain opener into drain once per week to keep drains flowing freely. Wait thirty (30) minutes and flush with cold water. NOTE: Whenever working with a drain opener, goggles and rubber gloves should be worn. 3. Opening Small Drains: remove drain strainer, remove standing water. Pour one (1) ounce (2 tablespoons) of beaded drain opener into drain. Add one cup of cold water. If drain is not open in thirty (30) minutes, repeat application. 4. Floor Drains: use same steps as in (3.), but increase amount to three (3) ounces (6 tablespoons) and three (3) cups of cold water. It cannot be stressed strongly enough to use extreme caution when working with these chemicals. They are very strong and can create severe burns if they come in contact with the skin or eyes. And, while they may not “sting” on initial contact, over time the burning becomes more and more severe. They can also cause respiratory problems if the fumes are inhaled. Thus, it is extremely important to wear the proper safety equipment – face mask, goggles and rubber gloves – when attempting to maintain or open clogged drains. If the drains do not open, DO NOT try other chemicals. The mixture may release toxic fumes that could be fatal. Check with your maintenance department or a qualified plumber for further efforts to open drains.
