1st US Approved Drug to Fight Fibromyalgia

The Unites States Food and Drug Administration just approved Lyrica (pregabalin) to treat Fibromyalgia. Lyrica is the first drug of its kind to be approved by the FDA to treat the disease that affects over 6 million Americans.

Acording to HealthDay news, “People with fibromyalgia usually have chronic pain, muscle stiffness, fatigue, and sleep problems. The disorder affects more women than men, and commonly develops in early-to-middle adulthood. In the absence of a diagnostic test, doctors typically conduct physical examinations, evaluate symptoms, and rule out other possibilities.”

The drug was approved after an 1800 person clinical trial came back with mostly positive results. Although the Lyrica does help many who suffer from Fibromyalgia, it does come with some side affects. Common side effects of the medication included dizziness, sleepiness, blurred vision, weight gain, dry mouth, and swelling of the extremities. Lyrica also can impair motor function and cause problems with concentration and attention, the FDA said.

Lyrica, manufactured by Pfizer, Inc., is already approved to treat partial seizures, and pain from shingles and diabetic neuropathy.
